Reuser t-shirt

REUSER - Premiership!

No two words better encapsulate Ipswich Town's return to the top flight of English football in May 2000.

As flying Dutchman Martijn Reuser fired home the fourth and final goal in injury time to seal Town's 4-2 success against Barnsley, so the Promised Land of the money-laden Premiership finally became reality.

Town had narrowly missed out on automatic promotion on the last day of the season to Manchester City, and were left to contest the lottery of the end-of-season play-offs for a fourth successive season.

Martijn ReuserNot that anyone was raising their hopes too much after three failed attempts and especially when Town trailed 2-0 at Bolton inside half an hour of the semi-final first leg.

Town rallied to draw 2-2 and required extra-time in the second leg at Portman Road to beat Bolton, Reuser breaking clear of the Wanderers' defence to score the fifth and final goal in an epic 5-3 victory.

So Town had booked their place in the Wembley showdown in what was to be the last major domestic match to be played beneath the Twin Towers before the old stadium was bulldozed.

Town trailed as early as the sixth minute when Craig Hignett's shot hit the bar and rebounded off Richard Wright and into the goal. Tony Mowbray's towering header brought Ipswich level after 28 minutes before Town upped the tempo in the second period.

Martijn Reuser and George BurnleySubstitute Richard Naylor put Ipswich ahead in the 52nd minute and six minutes later Marcus Stewart lost his marker to head Town 3-1 in front.

A 78th minute Hignett penalty set the nerves of the 37,000 Town fans jangling and Richard Wright had to pull off a point-blank instinctive save to keep the Suffolk side's noses in front.

With the whistles ringing around Wembley Naylor slid the ball into the path of Reuser who had a clear run on goal and he finished emphatically from the edge of the area, causing the commentator to utter arguably the most famous phrase in the club's history: Reuser - Premiership!
